I Support the Ethics Trial in NSW Primary Schools
Dear Jonathan O'Dea
I am writing to add my strong support for the Ethics Trial [more].
The current policy is unfair to a large number of children, and was put in place when NSW was a very different place from a cultural and religious perspective than it is now. Further, I believe very strongly that religious studies have little place in a state school system, unless it is part of a larger study of all world religions.
Nevertheless, if time is to be dedicated to scripture, I do not understand why something meaningful, such as ethics, cannot be offered to those children not attending scripture. If ethics is not part of the school curriculum, there can be no claim that it is unfair to children attending scripture as they will not be missing out on anything that will form part of their overall assessment.
