I Support the Ethics Trial in NSW Primary Schools
Dear Burney
I am writing to add my strong support for the Ethics Trial [more].
As a parent of 2 young girls in the inner west I am shocked to discover that the current laws forbid schools from providing meaningful instruction during SRE to children whose parents do not follow a religion. I believe this is outright abuse of their human right based on their belonging to a particular social group (in this case a group who do not worship a god). While it may be argued this is a small amount of time in their school week it must not be overlooked that their counterparts are at that time receiving some form of ethical/spiritual instruction and our children have an equal right to this opportunity. It is also evident to the children themselves that they are missing out of something during their "non-scripture" period and deserve to understand their not belonging to a particular religion is not a lack but rather a choice and that their lives can and should still be guided by ethics.
I would like to know what you are doing to support the ongoing implementation of these Ethics classes as a choice option for all children in all schools.
