I Support the Ethics Trial in NSW Primary Schools
Dear Marie Andrews
I am writing to add my strong support for the Ethics Trial [more].
I can see no logical reason why the ethics classes should not be made a permanent alternative to SRE classes in NSW schools.
The ethics classes are not designed to undermine the religous teachings of SRE, they are simply an alternative for those who do not want to attend SRE.
Only 4 years ago I was attending a public high school in Gosford. I had two main options; go to a classroom for Catholic teachings, or go to the hall for a Christian celebration. Apparently I had a third option of going to the library on my own and reading. Although I find this to be a cop out of an alternative to attending the religion classes. On the day I generally just went to either the catholic teaching or the christian celebration, depending on which one my friends were attending. Given the option, I would certainly have attended ethics classes, a real alternative to SRE.
It is a dream of mine that one day SRE will be eliminated from all schools, but I understand in the near future that is unlikely to happen. At a minimum, those who do not wish to attend SRE should be given a legitimate and educational alternative. The Ethics classes will provide this, while still allowing religous parents to have their children attend SRE.
