Support The Ethics Trial

10 primary schools in NSW offer this semester an alternative to children who do not attend SRE classes. This trial is supported by numerous organisations, and most importantly, by many parents. This hasn't stopped some established Christian lobby groups to campaign against the trial. To stop parents from choosing.

Make yourself heard. Email your local newspaper, your local MP, Minster Firth or the Premier herself in support of the trial. And copy or forward your message to ethics.trial@gmail.com. We will post your emails here and on Facebook. Such that your voice is on record and will not go unnoticed.

Dear Steve Cansdell
I am writing to add my strong support for the Ethics Trial  [more].
I have had the experience of my children (now all adults) having idle time while other children were in scripture. I even had one occasion when I attended the school after discovering the non-scripture classes were used to pick up rubbish in the school grounds. From my own experience and children's experience the opportunity to attend an ethics class would have been the best possible solution for atheist families. I urge you to remember that religious faith is still a choice and under no circumstances should people in any area of society be disadvantaged for their beliefs.
With Respect

I have one child currently at primary school who is currently being descriminated against by DET policy and another child who will soon be attending school. On their behalf and the behald of thousands of other children across the state who do not participate in scripture but are prevented for doing alternative learning, I urge you to support the introduction of Ethics classes in all State schools.

It is crucial that all children, no matter what their faith, (or lack of adherence to any religion) be treated in a fair and equal manner in our secular public school system.
Please support the ethics trial to give ALL Australian children a chance to learn something of their choice during the SRE time slot.
Thank you,
Susan Terravecchia

Dear Ted Baillieu

I do not believe that my son should be "put out" his class or even when enroling in school choose to "opt out" of SRE. This is unfair, discrimative and prejudice against those who choose not engage in religous belief.
Looking through Support Special Ethics Education website, I believe this type of education would benefit my son and family as it welcome discussion from all races and religions.
I do hope that you would consider this try of trial or even replacement of SRE or alturnative supliment for anyone choosing to "opt out" of SRE.

Dear Carmel Tebbutt

I am a parent and was a teacher of the Ethics trial. Overwhelmingly, the students involved engaged with Ethics in a way that was greatly encouraging for their ability to make ethical decisions about their own lives now and into the future.

At present my children feel they are being punished because they are being taken from the room and isolated as is often the case when in trouble. This time would be better spent learning ethical behaviour and benefitting the community generally.

Dear Jonathan O'Dea

The current policy is unfair to a large number of children, and was put in place when NSW was a very different place from a cultural and religious perspective than it is now. Further, I believe very strongly that religious studies have little place in a state school system, unless it is part of a larger study of all world religions.
Nevertheless, if time is to be dedicated to scripture, I do not understand why something meaningful, such as ethics, cannot be offered to those children not attending scripture. If ethics is not part of the school curriculum, there can be no claim that it is unfair to children attending scripture as they will not be missing out on anything that will form part of their overall assessment.

Dear Thomas George

By being able to study ethics it will enhance compassion and kindness for those in a disadvantaged position. It will also help students think of the options and some of the consequences for any actions they take when in some kind of conflict/ethical dilemma. When we have faith in our actions than we can begin to see a brighter, clearer world.
Please also have some faith in this ethics trial and help support our kids for a brighter future.

* The minister only has to change DET policy (not the law) to approve ongoing ethics classes as an option for kids who opt out of scripture.
* St James Ethics Centre and the NSW Federation of P&C Associations have no desire or intention to eliminate SRE from schools.
* That anyone should wish to deny any child further opportunity to spend a period of meaningful reflection about aspects of what makes for a good life and a good society is a serious ethical issue in itself.
* Parents of all faiths and of no particular faith have joined together to press for this initiative to proceed.
* The pilot is designed to engage students in ethical inquiry rather than to offer them ethical instruction. The treatment of the subject matter will stimulate students to explore ethical issues through dialogue and discussion. Students will be involved in building a collaborative and inquiring community.
* The Rawlinson Committee (set up to review Special Religious Education in schools) specifically recommended in 1980 that students who do not attend SRE be offered purposeful secular learning in this time slot (Rec 62). Ethics classes meet this recommendation.
* All material developed for an ongoing program will be made freely available to SRE providers so that they can match or exceed what is offered in secular ethics classes.
* A commitment to secular education does not imply hostility to religion. The secular state is the best guarantee of freedom of conscience and belief for all. A secular approach to ethics classes will be open to a diverse range of perspectives.

Dear Barry O'Farrell
I am writing to add my strong support for the Ethics Trial  [more].
It seems to me there would be two really positive outcomes for the teaching of Ethics in Public Schools as an alternative to non-Scripture :-
* the children would be learning in a constructive way instead of wasting time running errands or sitting in hallways as is the case in some schools in this area.
* more importantly they would be involved in a class in a positive way. At present going to non-scripture means being excluded from an activity which most or all others attend. This exclusion leads to bullying and discrimination.
My family had a very distressing time dealing with the treatment our children faced because we wanted them to attend non-scripture. This was in 3 different schools over a period of about 10 years. This is in the past for us now as our children have left school. At the time I was amazed such discrimination could exist on the North Shore where I've lived most of my life. I don't want other families to endure this. The Ethics Classes really might be the solution.
Please support the Ethics Classes Mr O'Farrell.
